I Feel Pretty
So there is one thing I love allllmost as much as clothes and fashion..and that is makeup! Ever since I discovered it as a pale, pre-teen I was obsessed. My years of experimenting definitely led to many, MANY unfortunate looks..raccoon eyes, glittery cheeks, frosted lips, you name it! (1998-2004 was an embarrassment to say the least) But like all things, practice makes perfect and I soon was able to blend, wing and pucker like a pro. Here I'll talk about some of my favorites, what's worth it and what's not.
So, I will admit I have been blessed with pretty good skin. Not dry, not oily and free of acne except for the occasional pimple during that time of the month. However, as a woman of color it is often hard to find the correct shade for my skin tone and although my color is relatively even, I do have SERIOUS dark circles under my eyes..like DARK I'm not playin you think Kim K is bad bare faced? You ain't seen nothin! So, after many trials and errors, lately I've been really happy with Laura Mercier for foundation. During the summer when I'm nice and tan I just stick with their Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer as a base but for the rest of the year I use the Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide foundation, it's really light and has a silky finish with just enough coverage. Not enough coverage for those bags unfortunately. For those bad boys I've searched high and low for a thick, full coverage concealer that doesn't crease after an hour. Recently I've been hooked on the Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealing Creme. It is AMAZING! Still a little creasing towards the end of the day but I think that's just inevitable with any concealer and gravity. I really love it though, it truly covers all of the imperfections. I top it all off with just a basic Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder to set in all the goodness.
For bronzer, lately I've been going for more of a matte look instead of shimmery because that tends to make me look dry and kind of greyish (weird, I know). I'm loving Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder Compact. It literally has the slightest amount of shimmer I don't even notice it but it's great for contouring and adding overall warmth. Lastly, the coveted Becca Champagne Pop highlighter. I might get some backlash for this butttt I honestly am not a fan. As I mentioned the "shimmer" effect is not great on me, maybe Champagne Pop is just too light for my skin tone but it just makes me look dead instead of poppin like I had hoped. Hey, you win some you lose some. So, I am still on the hunt for a nice glossy highlighter so I can shine like the gods.
Now, on to the lips..
Obviously, everyone has been overly obsessed with the release of the highly anticipated Kylie Jenner Lip Kit. I was obviously first to jump on that band wagon! Crushing over Kylie's lips over snapchat on a daily, I couldn't wait to try the trendy matte look made by the pout princess herself. After many attempts, I finally got my hands on a few. This picture is with Posie K and I also have Candy K, 22, and Exposed gloss. You guys, I gotta be honest..I really want to love them...but as of right now it's just a like. So sad, I know. But don't get me wrong, the colors are great. Nice pigment and lasting color. But like most mattes, they are really drying on the lips causing cracks and little crumbles throughout the day. I do love the colors, 22 is my favorite red right now so the only thing I'm really dissing is the formula, I need my moisture people!
I think my tried and true will always be Mac. It was the first non drug store cosmetics purchase I ever made. There's just so many options and you always know what you're going to get. From the celebrity collabs to limited edition lines, the colors are always bomb. My current faves are Velvet Teddy and Twig. Paired with Whirl liner, Velvet Teddy is the perfect nude for my skin tone and Twig is a nice neutral wine/berry color, great for fall.
Ok end of rant but I'm thinking at this point there's going to be a second segment because I haven't even gotten into the eye makeup yet. Let me know what you'd like to hear and I'm looking forward to sharing more of my picks. Shop my faves below. Shine on!
